ESNAAD checks employees’ hearts
ESNAAD, a wholly owned subsidiary of ADNOC Group, hosted a 2-day awareness campaign about heart disease by Sheikh Khalifa Medical City this week as part of the World Heart Day activities. Presented in its Musaffah base, the campaign included checking the hearts of employees and educating them about heart disease and prevention. Following a presentation by Dr Sherif Bakir, Consultant Cardiologist at Sheikh Khalifa Medical City, employees had their height and weight recorded, blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar recorded, as well as a lung capacity check for smokers. Their results were then reviewed by a physician and discussed with the employees to advise them about their risk factors and recommend a course of action. Over 350 ESNAAD employees attended the event and were very happy to have the opportunity to check their cardiovascular health.
ESNAAD General Manager Darwish Abdullah Al Qubaisi commended the efforts of the Health Authority of Abu Dhabi and Sheikh Khalifa Medical City for providing such important awareness campaigns and taking them out to employees at their workplace in order to help in the early detection of diseases and better prevention. He added that ESNAAD was keen on organizing many social and health initiatives for company staff, in order to add value to the company and its culture by interacting with other organizations and benefiting from their expertise.
Al Qubaisi said that ESNAAD will use the statistics issued by the Health Authority to formulate future plans and awareness initiatives for employees to help reduce preventable diseases.
Dr. Sherif Bakir, Consultant Cardiologist, said that Sheikh Khalifa Medical City had decided to organize an awareness campaign throughout the year in different government organizations to educate people on risk factors that could lead to heart problems and ways to avoid those risks in order to better protect themselves as studies show that 9% of heart disease can be avoided through early detection. He added that the goal of these campaigns was to train people on prevention rather than reaction, as many people only visit a cardiologist when they feel heart symptoms.
2009 statistics showed that 28 to 31% of UAE nationals suffer from hypertension and 24% suffer from diabetes. International studies show that the UAE has the second highest rate of diabetes per capita of any country in the world, according to Dr Sherif..
